Secretary Pritzker Speaks at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit

This week, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker participated in a panel discussion at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit, where she discussed the economy and steps the U.S. government and private sector can take to spur economic growth and job creation, building a bridge to the business community.

During her question and answer session with Nina Easton, Secretary Pritzker noted that in her first year at the Commerce Department she has visited 25 countries on behalf of American companies and met with more than 1,200 business leaders, including more than one-third of the Fortune 500. Secretary Pritzker also highlighted SelectUSA, an Obama Administration program, led by the Commerce Department program dedicated to making the United States the world’s premier location for business investment.

Secretary Pritzker also highlighted her role as America’s Chief Commercial Advocate and key member of the President’s economic team; focusing on the importance of trade and investment, and her vision that commercial diplomacy matters and that we must do more to utilize one of our greatest resources, the American business community.

Secretary Pritzker also discussed the Department’s “Open for Business Agenda” which is focused primarily on trade and investment, innovation and data, all key drivers to growing the economy. She highlighted many of the accomplishments of the Department in the past year under her leadership, to create the conditions that empower U.S. private sector companies to out-innovate anyone in the world, and encourage entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into successful businesses.

She concluded her panel discussion talking about her recent trip to Ukraine, Poland and Turkey, leading members of the President’s Export Council on an economic fact-finding mission. She also included a more personal note, discussing how her great grandfather Nicholas Pritzker emigrated from Ukraine to the United States 133 years ago in search of prosperity and security and how she discussed this story during her one-on-one meeting with President Poroshenko.
